In the south of the palace, the Ducal Museum was built in 1879 as a representative location for the diverse collections, which were now gaining international recognition. Between 1950 and 2010, the building was used as a museum of nature. Today, the art collections are given a worthy exhibition setting here. On display are important works of art from antiquity to modern times, including one of the oldest European Egyptian collections with mummies and grave finds, Old German masters (such as the “Gotha Lovers” and important works by the two Cranachs), a Dutch collection, sculptures by Jean-Antoine Houdon, works by Rubens and Caspar David Friedrich, porcelain from Meissen, Thuringia and Asia. Changing exhibitions present the treasures of the Prints and Drawings Department, including works by Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer and a special collection of pamphlets from the 15th to 17th centuries.
