Gotha, the venerable residence on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest. Under the rule of the Thuringian landgraves and electors, it developed into a major city of the state of Thuringia.
You can still enjoy the richly decorated facades of the restored burgher houses on the Hauptmarkt, with the historic town hall and the churches. It is dominated by Friedenstein Castle, the largest early baroque palace in Germany. The Ekhof Theater, the oldest surviving baroque theater in the world, with original stage technology made of wood, is located in the west tower of the castle.
The castle park including its own orangery invites you to take a walk at any time. The Wartburg in Eisenach and the state capital Erfurt are only about 30 minutes away.
